Change – Threat or an Opportunity?

by Kapil Nautiyal
MBA-IT 3rd Sem, IIIT-Allahabad

Nothing is constant except change, thus said some wise person.

Indeed that’s true. Since time immemorial, humans have witnessed change, change and constant change. From the early man who accidentally set fire, to the advancements of the present age, we have been beset with changes from the miniscule to the gigantic.
The last couple of decades have seen increasingly rapid changes and paradigm shifts. At some point of time, we tend to think, are these changes doing us any good or are going the other way.
Change, traditionally has always been susceptible to suspicion. Our human cognitive abilities and our mental construction has been so designed that we resist change most of the times. Change is often considered more of a threat than opportunity. But if we travel back in time, we will witness that most of the times, change has benefited humans. The early man, who perceived fire as a threat, later realized that it could impart softness and taste to flesh, protect him from wild animals and a lot many other things. Even social changes are resisted to the hilt, though they may help in the upliftment of the concerned people. The dogmatic and orthodox views come in the way of any social change.
But, it is the adventurous risk taking ability and the vision in some people that they view change as an opportunity rather than threat. History is rife with incidents of the acceptance of change and the subsequent enormous benefits such change has bestowed upon the human populace.

Change can thus be viewed in two ways: threat or opportunity.

A perspective of opportunity will propel people to strive to grab the opportunity and reap the profits that that opportunity may provide. It will lead to hard work, improved abilities, efficiency, and continued growth. In fact, these very qualities are required to succeed in every sphere of life.
A threat perspective of change will lead to limitations, indolence, and missed opportunities for advancement and development.
Attitude has a lot to do with how people view change as opportunity or as threat. As an example, a high population will most of the times be viewed as a threat to any country. A person possessing a positive attitude and vision may think of it as an opportunity in adversity. A high population means huge labor resource. If all of it or even a fraction of it is converted into a productive mass, the balance of scales can tilt in favor of the country.
Thus, Opportunity in Adversity is what we should believe in.
